Natural Disasters that affect Nepal the most.

Image
Nepal lies in one of those parts of the world that has a very complicated geographical structures. ⅓ of the whole country is mountains, ⅓ of the country is hills and valleys and the last ⅓ of Nepal is the plains. With different geographical structure comes different types of natural hazards. Nepal lies right in the intersection of the Indian and Eurasian plate as you can see in the picture below retrieved from ARCGIS education maps . There are many fault lines going throughout the country horizontally. Nepal is prone to very high magnitude earthquakes from time to time.  According to Himalayan times , More than 42,000 people have been killed in natural disasters in the past 45 years which is a lot of people considering how small the country is and how many people live there. Most of those deaths were caused by Earthquake. Earthquake is most probably the main natural hazard that terrifies the whole country. Many more lives could have been saved if only people were educated ab...

Costal Hazards in England

Image
According to The Guardian ,Rising sea levels will claim homes, roads and fields around the coast of England, the government’s official advisers have warned, and many people are unaware of the risks they face.  Currently, 8,900 properties are at risk from coastal erosion and in 2014 the  Environment Agency calculated that 7,000 homes, worth more than £1Billion, would fall into the sea  this century. But the CCC report found that in the 2080s another 100,000 properties would be at risk of sliding into the sea. The sea levels are expected to rise by over 40 cm.  According to climate change post ,  Observed rates of sea level rise for the east coast of England between Whitby and Cromer range from 1.1 mm/year at Immingham to 2.1 mm/year at Whitby. These raw estimates include natural rates of tectonically induced sea level rise resulting from post-glacial coastal subsidence which are estimated at between 0 and 1.0 mm/year. Projections indicate that by ...

Extreme weather in Nepal

Image
Climatic conditions of Nepal vary from one place to another in accordance with their geographical features. In the north summers are cool and winters severe, while in the south summers are tropical and winters are mild. Nepal has five seasons: spring, summer, monsoon, autumn and winter. In a report that places Nepal 11th among countries most affected by extreme weather events in the last 20 years, four of the Nepal’s neighbors are placed even higher.  Prepared by Germanwatch, an independent development organization, . Bangladesh at 7, Pakistan at 8 and India at 14th in the report and Myanmar is at rank 3. The city of lakes and mountains has witnessed extreme weather conditions that are regarded as atypical in spring season. Nepals climate can get very extreme but it is seasonal. Hailstorm has reportedly killed 19 people in  Nepal  last in 2017.  Nepals government is really poor so they can't do anything about these extreme weather even if they w...

Mass Wasting in Nepal

Image
Nepal is an underdeveloped country with the geography of very high mountains and hills. 2/3 of the whole population of the country is living in Kathmandu Valley which is surrounded by really big hills. People have been living in those hills from a really long time. According to a research done by Gopal Sharma, who works for Scientific American , Nepal faces an annual monsoon rain which could be fatal in cases of flooding and landslides. Heavy rain in the hilly regions of Nepal makes the soil loose and fall off the hills which has killed hundreds of people in the course of years. In the 2018, at least 60 people died due to mudslides and more than 200 people have been reported injured. Nepal has been trying to reinforce the areas of mass flooding with stones and cement but they've only been successful in doing it in certain places. 2016 Landslide killed 7 people in the houses in the picture A research based on landslides in Nepal from 1978-2005, there was a total of 397 fatal ...

Volcanoes

Image
According to National Geographic , "a volcano is an opening in Earth’s crust that allows molten rock from beneath the crust to reach the surface. This molten rock is called magma when it is beneath the surface and lava when it erupts or flows from a volcano. Along with lava, volcanoes also release gases, ash, and rock. It’s a super hot mix that can be both incredibly destructive and creative." Though Nepal has a lot of mountains, non of them are volcanoes. The two neighboring countries India and China have some volcanoes. Red triangles show the four active intra-plate volcanoes in China The red triangles in the picture above extracted from ScienceDirect are Wudalianchi, Changbai, Tengchong, and Hainan. These are the most active volcanoes in China. The closest one to Nepal is the Tengchong volcano which last erupted in 1609. There is no earthquakes around the area recorded which means the volcano may not erupt anytime soon. Picture of Tengchong volcano fr...

Earthquakes in Nepal

Image
According to USGS ,"Earthquake is a term used to describe both sudden slip on a fault, and the resulting ground shaking and radiated seismic energy caused by the slip, or by volcanic or magmatic activity, or other sudden stress changes in the earth" Nepal faced a really big earthquake of magnitude 7.8 not too long ago. Talking from personal experience, as I was there during the time of the earthquake, not many people seemed to know what they were doing when the earthquake hit. Many more lives could have been saved if only people were educated about the safety majors and implemented them during the time of the earthquake. A report on the recent earthquake in Nepal talks about how "Earthquakes doesn't kill people, it's usually the buildings collapsing." Fault line passing through Nepal from USGS After the last earthquake, many people lost their houses. When people started rebuilding their houses, the government enforced a law for houses bigger than 2 f...

Nepal on the Plate Tectonic Map

Image
Nepal is a very small landlocked country sandwiched between two of Asias biggest countries, India and China. The tallest mountain in the world, Mt.Everest is located in the Himalayas of Nepal. In the picture below that I acquired from " Nepal: The amazon of Asia " ,you can see that the map of Nepal is kind of in a rectangular shape. Map Of Nepal Nepal lies right in the intersection of the Indian and Eurasian plate as you can see in the picture below retrieved from  ARCGIS education maps . There are many fault lines going throughout the country horizontally. Nepal is prone to very high magnitude earthquakes from time to time. The most recent earthquake in Nepal was 7.8 magnitude on April 2015 that killed nearly 9,000 people and injured more than 22,000 people all over the country.
